1. Prepare with WAEC Syllabus

How to Pass WAEC Exam

This is the first step to pass WAEC Exam. Preparing for the exam with WAEC syllabus will give you an edge to pass the SSCE exam with an excellent grade. You may be wondering what the WAEC Syllabus is all about. Simply put, the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) syllabus is a document that contains topics that you must study to pass WAEC Exam.

The WAEC syllabus is a guide for students preparing for exams to read topics they would encounter in the examination. This gives students an edge in preparing for the exam. I used this back then on my second sitting and it was what helped me.

If you are a student and you are studying outside the syllabus is definitely the sure way to failure. You must read only the topics in the syllabus.

Every school uses the WAEC syllabus from SSS 1 to SSS3 learning and preparing students for WAEC exams. It is advisable to go through the syllabus not to omit any topic during your study when preparing.

2. Know The WAEC Exam Format

How to Pass WAEC Exam - Know The WAEC Exam Format

Another major step to preparing for WASSCE Exams is to know the format of the exam. Many students fall victim to this as they turn to use another examination format to be preparing for WAEC. This is the first and sure step to failure. I always advise students to always know the format in which the WAEC Exam is to be set and use that to solve the problem.

Another area you need to look at is to know the number and subject combination for the exam. In WAEC Examinations, you must register at least six subjects and at most nine subjects. This includes English Language and Mathematics for Science, Art and Commercial students.

Theory and multiple-choice questions are the nature of the WAEC exam. Students in the Sciences will write the practical exam in Physics, Chemistry and Biology for WASSCE.

I recommend that you follow the directives of your teachers in your secondary school. Please do ask questions about the WAEC exam format to get more clarification.

3. Design your Own Study Timetable

How to Pass WAEC Exam - Design your Own Study Timetable

Designing your own study timetable is another step for you to perform well in your exam. YES! you heard my personal timetable you alone know yourself and you know how best to prepare. So design a timetable that you will easily understand and relate with. One skill I used then was to assign a different subject for each particular day. For example, I will decide to study Physics on Monday, Chemistry on Tuesday and so on. Remember to do it to your own understanding.

Please note that your daily study WAEC timetable should not contain too many topics that you cannot read.

I would advise you to set your study schedule to something that you can achieve every day without stress. The whole importance of a timetable serves as a guide not to read out of the box.

Read according to the pace that you understand. Just because your friend can read for 8 hours does not mean you have to do the same if you can read for 3 hours and understand then use that to prepare. Remember everyone is not the same when it comes to knowledge.

The only thing I will recommend here is that you start your preparations early enough to cover the WAEC syllabus.

If you have any problem setting up a study timetable, let me know in the comment box and I will be more than happy to help you with a template.

I would advise that you prepare with WAEC Timetable. Click the link below to download WAEC timetable for ss3.

4. Study Your SSCE Notes

How to Pass WAEC Exam - Study Your SSCE Notes

Studying your SSCE note is also a vital tool to pass your WAEC exam without stress. Just as I said, earlier schools in the country are designed to teach based on the syllabus. Therefore your note is a summary of your syllabus. You must know everything that you have done since your SSS 1 to SSS 3.

Your SSCE notes will help you study well as they will help enhance your understanding as you read your textbooks. It is easy to understand what you have written in your own hand.

When reading your textbooks and you are having difficulties understanding a topic, consult your old notebooks.

Get your old notes to study the topics in the WAEC syllabus.

I would advise that you study your SSCE notes with the recommended textbooks for WAEC.

5. Read and Study

How to Pass WAEC Exam - Read and Study

You have prepared your timetable, know the exam format for the exam and all this will be a waste of time if you do not read and study at your own pace. It is the only way to pass your examination in flying colours. There are no two ways about it. It is the only secret of how you can make A’s in your WAEC Examination.

For you to pass WAEC Exams you must study between lines to understand the topics in the WAEC syllabus.

One spirit that affects students in this stage is the spirit of procrastination. This spirit is so strong as it makes you want to skip difficult topics for another day. Do not try it or else you will encounter problems on the day of your exam.

You can use the comment box below to tell me the topics you are having difficulties understanding. Do not worry, I will give you the guidelines on how you can tackle the problem.

Also, for difficult topics, watch tutorials on our YouTube Channel (InsideSchool vLog) and search for an explanation on Google. Everything you want is on google. All you just need is to know the right way to ask the question. You may want to meet your secondary school teachers to solve some of these problems.

Subjects like Mathematics and Physics may need constant practice with problems.

How to Read and Understand for Exams

  1. Read at a specific time every day.
  2. Attempt to solve the calculation questions in your textbooks and examples in class.
  3. Do not cram the calculations in your notes or textbooks.
  4. Study your notes and textbooks between lines.
  5. Understand the concepts in a page before moving to the next.
  6. Do not check your WhatsApp and Facebook during study hours.
  7. Learn and understand the steps for calculations.
  8. Do not lie down when you are reading.
  9. Study in a serene environment with no form of distractions.
  10. Plan your study ahead of time.
  11. Use mnemonics to study that helps you to recall what you read.
  12. Create a perfect study environment.
  13. Do not read text aloud when you study.
  14. Suppress every feeling of laziness.

One thing I can tell every student preparing for WAEC is that WAEC Physics and Mathematics calculations are not hard. You need to understand the basic principle of how to solve the problems. That is all you need to do it.

After you know the laws of the calculations, you can then begin the next step.

6. Practice WAEC Past Questions

Practice they say makes perfect so as you practice these past questions and answers, you get familiar with how WAEC sets their exam. The theory section of the past questions will help you to know how to answer essay questions.

I will advise you not to make the mistake of cramming the answers in the past question booklet. You need to practice how to solve problems, not Crame. The purpose of the past questions is for you to learn how to process the questions yourself.

There is this saying no man is an island. Most students think they can study on their own to pass. Well if it works for you that you can study on your own then congratulations, but if by any chance you do not like to study alone. I will advise you to Join a WAEC study group that would help to make you better prepared for the exam.

A WAEC study group simply means when a few students about four persons come together to study. The group study is based on reading the syllabus and practising past questions.

One major advantage of group study is that it will help you to not relent on your exam preparations. Even when you feel like being lazy, other members will serve as motivation for you to study.

I will advise you to look for serious-minded students who want to pass the WAEC exam with distinctions once and for all. Do not get yourself into the wrong group that would distract you from your studies.

You may find it difficult to ask questions in your conventional classroom during school hours. But during tutorials, you have the opportunity to request more explanation and guess what more points will be explained to you.

I will advise you here that when choosing a tutorial centre make that tutorial you attend is exam-focused. Do not go to lesson centres where students go to show off the latest fashion and mobile devices.

Most secondary schools in the country organize WAEC lessons for their students. You would be better off attending the tutorial organized by your school as they know the areas that you will be needing in the exams.

10. Write WAEC Mock Exam

How to Pass WAEC Exam Write WAEC Mock Exam 1

This is a part I would like to throw more light on as so many students do not see the need to take the WAEC Mock Exam for one reason or the other. Well if you are reading this line and you have had a mind of not taking the mock exam before I will advise that you have a rethink about it.

The WAEC mock exam is a way to test your learning ability before the main WAEC Exam. The mock exam is organized by schools to test students for the SSCE exams. Mock exams have the standard of the main SSCE exam. The nature of the mock exam is the same format as the WAEC exam.

The WAEC mock exam allows you to know your level of preparedness and also to know your weak spot. After the test, you would know your chances of passing the WAEC exam as you know your performance.

If you do well in your mock exam, the chances are that you will likely pass your WAEC in flying colours.

11. Eat and Exercise

How to Pass WAEC Exam Eat and

I know you will like this as you have heard FOOD. Well yes eating healthy foods and exercising will help your brain to keep all that you read during preparation for this exam.

I advise that when you are preparing for your examination, only eat healthy foods rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, etc.

Do not eat junk foods as they do not have any nutritional benefits to assist with your exam preparations.

Please do well to drink plenty of water while you read to keep your body hydrated.

To pass WAEC Exams without stress I will advise you to stay away from Facebook and WhatsApp.These social media platforms are a big distraction for many students. They take away your study time. You must learn how to shut out these distractions as you prepare for the SSCE exams.

I will advise that you do not look down on yourself and that you cannot make it in the exam. It does not matter if you are not attending the best secondary school in your state.

Develop a positive mindset inside of you that you will make distinctions in the exam. This self-motivation propels you to study harder for your exams.

How to Answer WASSCE Questions

I recommend that you do not waste time with unfamiliar questions. Attempt the questions that you know before tackling other problems.

Also, learn to work on your own inside the exam hall. Do not make the mistake of trying to collaborate with other classmates inside the exam hall.

Collaborating with other students inside the exam hall will affect your performance. As you are preparing, make the decision that you want to be independent during the exam.

As you decide to work alone, your brain will make you study harder for your exams. This inner push is because you know there is no other way to pass your exams.

It is necessary to obey the instructions of the WAEC officials in your exam centre. Violating any of the rules may lead you to failure.

Never be in a rush to answer questions in the exam. Read the instructions in the question paper before you begin the test. For example, you have to answer four questions out of six questions in the question booklet.
